The name of this pattern is called “Kowhai Ngutu Kaka” (“Ngutu” means “Beak” and “Kaka”, “Parrot”). As illustrated in the images, the red shape within the pattern is taken from our native bird “The Kaka”, the shape of it’s beak. The flowers on our native bush (which has the same name and also known as “Kaka Beak”) is also the same shape. The shrub features clusters of red flowers in Spring. The pattern depicts the parrot beak, facing each other, as if talking to each other (which Parrots are well known for – “talking”). This pattern is based on communication.
