The Cook Strait Giant Weta is one of the largest and heaviest insects in the world reaching up to 7cm in length and weighing up to 35gms (that’s heavier than an average house sparrow). The female Weta is heavier then the male. The female Weta has a long ovipositor (egg laying tube) that looks like a stinger at the rear of her body. Just inside the front of their legs is a pair of holes – “Their Ears”. They need to shed their hard outer covering to grow in size (exoskeleton). They are nocturnal, hiding during the day and move around at night. They feed on fresh leaves and prefer native plants with large leaves. The Giant Weta is more passive than other wetas.
