Tuatara means “Peaks on the back”. The Tuatara has an ancient lineage that goes back to the dinosaurs and are the only survivor from the order of reptiles from this period, some 200 million years ago. Tuatara mature slowly and can live to over 100 years old. The Tuatara eats insects, beetles, spiders, birds eggs, frogs and small reptiles and mammals. Males are larger than females. Henry is the oldest living Taonga at the Southland Museum & Art Gallery. He is over 100 years old. He originally came from Takapourewa (Stephens Island) in 1970, Ngati Koata Nelson. The Museum has pioneered captive husbandry and been breeding Tuatara since 1986, holding a current population of over 100 Tuatara. Southland Museum is one of New Zealand’s best places to view Tuatara. Tuatara to Maori are Kaitiaki, Guardians of Knowledge.
